One of the greatest advancements in preventive dental care has been the development of dental sealants. Available since 1970, dental sealants are partly responsible for the reduction of the incidence of tooth decay in the United States over the past forty years.
Dental sealants are gently applied with no anesthesia or tooth preparation necessary. The entire process is painless, safe, and is completed in just a few minutes. We first clean and dry the tooth to be treated and then paint a thin layer of liquid plastic material on the pits and fissures of the tooth. The plastic sealant prevents bacteria from getting down into the tooth where our toothbrush bristles do not reach. By sealing off the tooth, we very effectively prevent tooth decay from occurring. Children should receive sealants on permanent molars as soon as they erupt (between ages 6 and 12).
